Same-Sex Attraction in the Bible

The Bible addresses the question of sexuality with both depth and compassion. Every person, whatever their attractions, is created in the image of God and is infinitely loved by Him (Genesis 1:27). The historic biblical teaching holds that human sexuality finds its full and blessed expression within marriage between a man and a woman: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24), words that Jesus Himself reaffirmed (Matthew 19:4-6). Those who experience same-sex attraction are called, like all believers, to live according to God's design, trusting in His sufficient grace: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). It is important to distinguish temptation, which is not in itself sin, from consenting to it and acting against what God declares contrary to His order (Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:26-27). Every human being wrestles with some form of temptation he did not choose; the presence of attraction is not the fault. The gospel announces a transforming hope: "And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 6:11). The path may be demanding, but God calls each person to faithfulness to His design and promises His presence in the very heart of the struggle.
