The Covenant of Salt in the Bible
The covenant of salt is one of the most evocative images in Scripture for a binding, enduring, and indissoluble agreement. In the ancient Near East, salt was a preservative that prevented decay, and sharing salt at a meal signified loyalty and lasting friendship. When God attaches the language of salt to His covenants, He is declaring that they are permanent, incorruptible, and not to be broken. The phrase appears explicitly in Numbers 18:19, where the LORD gives to Aaron and his descendants all the holy offerings as a perpetual due, calling it "a covenant of salt forever before the LORD" for him and his offspring. The everlasting nature of the priestly portion is sealed by this image of salt that does not corrupt. A second clear use is found in 2 Chronicles 13:5, where Abijah reminds Israel that the LORD gave the kingship over Israel to David and his sons forever "by a covenant of salt." In both cases, salt underscores the unchanging faithfulness of God's promises. Salt was also a required ingredient in the offerings themselves. Leviticus 2:13 commands that every grain offering be seasoned with salt, and that "the salt of the covenant of your God" never be left out. Every sacrifice was thus marked by the reminder of God's enduring covenant relationship with His people. Jesus draws on this rich background when He calls His disciples to be salt. In Matthew 5:13 He declares, "You are the salt of the earth," warning that salt which loses its savor is good for nothing. In Mark 9:50 He urges, "Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another." Paul echoes this in Colossians 4:6, telling believers that their speech should always be "seasoned with salt," gracious and full of integrity. For believers today, the covenant of salt assures us that God's promises endure and cannot decay. It also calls us to a salted life: faithful, preserving, peace-making, and incorruptible, reflecting the steadfast covenant love of the God who keeps His word forever.
