Sacrificial Love in Scripture

Sacrificial love is the highest form of love the Bible describes. Jesus gives its very definition: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). This love does not seek its own interest but the good of others, even at the cost of self. It stands opposed to the self-serving love of the world, for it is measured not by feeling but by giving. Its supreme model is the love of Christ at the cross: "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). The cross thus becomes the standard by which all biblical love is measured. The apostle John draws a direct consequence for the believer: "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers" (1 John 3:16). Sacrificial love is not first an emotion but a decision to place another before oneself, even when it costs. It unfolds in great renunciations and in the small things of daily life: yielding, serving, listening, forgiving, and bearing the burdens of others. Paul expresses it in his exhortation: "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:3-4), after the pattern of Christ who humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross. To love in this way is to reflect the very heart of the Father.
