Sacrifice in the Bible

The theme of sacrifice runs through the whole of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. In the Old Testament the sacrificial system—burnt offerings, sin offerings, and peace offerings—foreshadowed the atoning work of Christ. This entire economy rested upon a solemn principle: "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness" (Hebrews 9:22). Sin demands a consequence, and someone must bear it. Yet those repeated sacrifices could never take away sins (Hebrews 10:4); they pointed forward to a single, perfect sacrifice. John the Baptist identified Jesus in these words: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). The letter to the Hebrews proclaims the fulfillment: "By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" (Hebrews 10:10). The sacrifice of Christ brings every sacrifice to an end; it fully satisfies the justice of God while revealing the immensity of His love, for "Christ died for us" while "we were still sinners" (Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 3:18). In light of this grace, the believer is called not to atone for his own faults but to offer spiritual sacrifices: "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God" (Romans 12:1). Hebrews 13:15-16 describes its twofold form: the sacrifice of praise from our lips, and doing good and sharing with our neighbor. The believer's sacrifice is his whole life consecrated to God.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the sacrifice of Christ necessary?
Hebrews 9:22 teaches that "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." Sin demands a consequence; someone must pay. Christ paid in our place (1 Peter 3:18). His sacrifice satisfies the justice of God and expresses the fullness of His love.
What sacrifices please God today?
Hebrews 13:15-16 names two: the "sacrifice of praise" (worship) and doing good toward others (service). Romans 12:1 adds: present our bodies as "a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God." The believer's sacrifice is his whole life.
Did the sacrifice of Christ bring other sacrifices to an end?
Yes. Hebrews 10:10 declares that we are sanctified "through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Christ, the Lamb of God (John 1:29), accomplished what repeated sacrifices could never finish, making any further atoning offering unnecessary.
