The Saturday Sabbath in the Bible
The seventh-day Sabbath is woven into the very fabric of creation. After forming the heavens and the earth in six days, God rested on the seventh day from all His work, and He blessed and sanctified that day, setting it apart as holy (GEN.2.2; GEN.2.3). The Sabbath therefore predates the nation of Israel and the law given at Sinai; it is rooted in God's own rhythm of work and rest, a pattern offered to all humanity. When the Lord delivered His people from Egypt, He enshrined the Sabbath in the Ten Commandments. The fourth commandment declares that the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord, on which no one is to do any work (EXO.20.10). The seriousness of this command is underscored elsewhere, where the seventh day is called a holy day of solemn rest, sacred to the Lord (EXO.31.15). In Leviticus the Sabbath is named among the appointed feasts as a day of complete rest and a holy convocation, a recurring gathering of God's people (LEV.23.3). The Sabbath also carries a compassionate, liberating purpose. In Deuteronomy, Moses links the day to Israel's deliverance from slavery, commanding rest not only for the Israelite but for servants, foreigners, and even animals (DEU.5.14). Rest is presented as a gift and a sign of freedom, not merely a prohibition. Even the provision of manna in the wilderness honored this rhythm: the people gathered bread for six days, but on the seventh day there was none, for it was the Sabbath (EXO.16.26). Taken together, these passages reveal the seventh-day Sabbath, observed from Friday evening to Saturday evening in the Hebrew reckoning, as a holy gift. It invites trust in God's provision, remembrance of His creating and redeeming work, and the restoration that comes from ceasing our labor to delight in the Lord.
