The Spiritual Rest of the Sabbath in the Bible
Matthew 11:28-29 contains one of the gentlest invitations of the gospel: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me... and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Here is spiritual rest in its purest expression: rest from the effort to earn one's salvation, rest from the weight of guilt, rest from existential anguish. The spiritual rest of the Sabbath is not passivity, but active trust in the Lord who has already overcome. It is the peace of God "which passeth all understanding," which keeps the hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). The contemporary soul is exhausted: exhausted from performing, from appearing, from achieving. Jesus offers a different rest, one that does not depend on circumstances. He sets his "easy" yoke and his "light" burden against the crushing weight of law without grace (Matthew 11:30). The epistle to the Hebrews exhorts us not to neglect this gift: "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest" (Hebrews 4:11). To enter into this spiritual rest means to trust in Christ (John 6:29), to lay down the burden of self-redemption, and to receive by faith the forgiveness and grace that Jesus offers. Whoever comes to him just as he is finds there the deep rest his soul thirsts for.
