Keeping the Sabbath in the Bible
Sabbath keeping is the faithful, holy observance of the seventh-day rest that God built into the order of creation and enshrined in the fourth commandment at Sinai: "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy" (EXO.20.8). For six days a person labors and accomplishes all their work (EXO.20.9), but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD their God, in which no work is to be done by them, their household, their servants, or even the stranger within their gates (EXO.20.10). The reason reaches back to creation itself, for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth and rested on the seventh day; therefore he blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it (EXO.20.11). To keep the Sabbath is not merely to stop working but to consecrate a portion of time wholly to God, treating it as holy because he has made it holy. More than a rule, the Sabbath is a perpetual covenant sign between the LORD and his people: the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe it throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant (EXO.31.16). To honor the day is to honor the One who sanctifies his people, and the observance marks them as belonging to him. Through Isaiah the LORD calls his people to turn their feet from doing their own pleasure on his holy day, to call the sabbath "a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable" (ISA.58.13). The Sabbath is therefore no burden but a sanctuary in time, set apart for worship and rest, a joyful turning toward God rather than a grudging suspension of labor. Deuteronomy adds a second great motive: the remembrance of deliverance. Israel was to keep the day mindful that they were servants in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD their God brought them out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm (DEU.5.15). The rest of the Sabbath proclaims liberation; the people who once toiled without ceasing under Pharaoh now cease their labor by the command of their Redeemer. For the believer today, faithful Sabbath keeping cultivates trust in God's provision, the discipline of ceasing from anxious toil, and the joy of communion with the Lord, pointing forward to the eternal rest that remains for the people of God.
