The Sabbath Day in the Bible

The Sabbath Day is the seventh day of the week, set apart by God as a holy day of rest and worship. The fourth commandment opens with the call, "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy" (EXO.20.8). For six days the people of God are to labor and do all their work (EXO.20.9), but the seventh day is "the sabbath of the LORD thy God," on which no one in the household is to do any work (EXO.20.10). The reason reaches all the way back to creation: "in six days the LORD made heaven and earth... and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it" (EXO.20.11). The Sabbath therefore mirrors the rhythm of God himself, who rested not from weariness but in order to delight in his finished work. When the commandments are repeated in Deuteronomy, the emphasis falls on keeping and sanctifying the day exactly as the LORD commanded (DEU.5.12). The Sabbath is at once a gift and a discipline, a weekly call to lay down our own occupations and turn our attention toward God. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord describes the heart of true Sabbath-keeping: turning away from doing our own pleasure on his holy day, and instead calling the sabbath "a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable" (ISA.58.13). The day is not a burden of empty rules but an invitation to find joy in God. Jesus deepened this teaching when he declared, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath" (MRK.2.27). Rest was given for our blessing, to restore body and soul, not to crush us beneath legalism. As Lord of the Sabbath, Christ reveals its true purpose: rest, worship, mercy, and communion with God. Whether observed on the seventh day or honored in the freedom of the new covenant, the Sabbath points the believer toward the deeper rest found in Christ, who calls the weary to come to him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Sabbath day in the Bible?
The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, which God blessed and set apart as holy. The fourth commandment says, "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy" (EXO.20.8), commanding rest from work because God himself rested on the seventh day after creation (EXO.20.11).
Why did God command Sabbath rest?
God grounded the Sabbath in creation: "in six days the LORD made heaven and earth... and rested the seventh day" (EXO.20.11). The day reflects God's own rhythm of work and rest, and Deuteronomy 5:12 calls Israel to sanctify it as a gift that restores body and soul.
Is the Sabbath a burden or a blessing?
Scripture presents the Sabbath as a delight, not a burden. Isaiah calls it "a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable" (ISA.58.13), and Jesus taught that "the sabbath was made for man" (MRK.2.27), showing it was given for our blessing and rest.
