Righteous Judgment in the Bible

The Bible calls for righteous judgment, because it reflects the very nature of God. Jesus declares in John 7:24: "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." Righteous judgment means weighing the facts with impartiality, without favoritism or prejudice, and applying to others the same measure one would apply to oneself. Deuteronomy instructs judges not to wrest justice nor to respect persons: "Thou shalt not wrest judgment... for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise" (Deuteronomy 16:18-20). Leviticus adds: "Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour" (Leviticus 19:15). Righteous judgment therefore has no double standard. God himself is the supreme Judge who judges with perfect equity and complete knowledge of every heart (Genesis 18:25). For the believer, exercising righteous judgment requires humility: to recognize that we do not always see the whole of reality. Discerning good from evil is a duty (1 Corinthians 6:2-3), but this discernment must be carried out in gentleness, truth, and the fear of God, without falling into the hypocritical judgment that Jesus condemns in Matthew 7:1-5. To judge rightly is finally to align our verdicts with God's own, seeking the good of our neighbor rather than our own vindication.

Can Christians judge others?
Matthew 7:1 says "Judge not," but the context targets hypocritical judgment. John 7:24 commands us to "judge righteous judgment." Believers must discern good from evil (1 Corinthians 6:2-3), but with humility, integrity, and impartiality.
How does God exercise righteous judgment?
