Resurrection in the Bible

The resurrection is the very heart of the Christian gospel. The apostle Paul affirms it without reservation in 1 Corinthians 15:14: "And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain." The resurrection of Jesus is neither a symbol, nor a metaphor, nor a merely subjective hope: it is an attested historical fact that validates everything Jesus taught, promised, and accomplished. Without the resurrection, the cross would remain a defeat; with it, the cross becomes a definitive victory. The resurrection guarantees the forgiveness of sins, for it proves that the sacrifice of the Son was fully accepted by the Father (Romans 4:25). It proclaims the defeat of death, that last enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26), and it assures the future bodily resurrection of all believers on the last day. The empty tomb, the appearances of the risen Christ to more than five hundred people (1 Corinthians 15:6), and the radical transformation of the disciples constitute a powerful testimony. Thus the Christian faith does not rest on an idea, but on an event: Christ has truly risen, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:20), and this truth changes everything for the one who believes. Because he lives, we shall live also (John 14:19).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the resurrection of Christ so important?
Without the resurrection, the gospel collapses. 1 Corinthians 15:17-18 declares: "If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins." The resurrection confirms that Jesus is who he claimed to be and that his sacrifice was accepted by the Father.
Is there historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus?
Yes. The empty tomb (Mark 16), the appearances of the risen Christ to more than five hundred people (1 Corinthians 15:6), the testimony of the disciples who died for this conviction, and the sudden conversion of Paul and James form solid historical foundations.
What hope does the resurrection give the believer?
The resurrection of Jesus is the pledge of our own resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:20 calls him "the firstfruits of them that slept." Because he lives, we shall live also (John 14:19). This hope transforms our relationship with death and fills us with unshakable assurance.
