Respect and Honor in the Bible
Respect is a fundamental value in the Bible, encompassing both reverence toward God and the honor due to others. Romans 13:7 instructs the believer: 'Render therefore to all their dues... honour to whom honour.' Biblical respect is not blind deference toward unjust authority; it is the recognition of the dignity God has placed in every person and in every legitimate institution. First Peter 2:17 sums it up with force: 'Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.' Respect has its source in the heart. When you honor another, you recognize the image of God in him, for every human being was created in that image (Genesis 1:27). Disrespect dishonors not only the person but also the Creator who formed him. This is why Philippians 2:3 exhorts: 'Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.' True respect is born of humility, not of servile fear. The Bible also teaches respect for established authorities. Romans 13:1-2 reminds us that all authority comes from God and that it is fitting to submit to it. Yet this respect has a clear limit: Acts 5:29 declares that 'we ought to obey God rather than men.' When authority demands disobedience to God, faithfulness to the Lord takes precedence. Thus the biblical culture of honor, lived out in humility and discernment, transforms relationships, families, and whole communities.
