Renewal in the Bible

Renewal is one of Scripture's great promises: the gracious work by which God refreshes, restores, and transforms his people from the inside out. Where sin brings decay, weariness, and brokenness, God brings newness of life. From the renewing of the mind to the daily renewal of the inner self, the Bible portrays renewal as both a present gift and an ongoing process sustained by the Spirit and the mercy of God. Transformation begins in the mind. Paul writes, 'Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God' (Romans 12:2). True change is not merely outward behavior but a renewed way of thinking that reshapes the whole life. This is why Paul also urges believers to 'be renewed in the spirit of your mind' (Ephesians 4:23), putting off the old self and putting on the new. Renewal is a daily reality even amid hardship. 'Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day' (2 Corinthians 4:16). For those who feel depleted, Scripture offers a promise of restored strength: 'They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles' (Isaiah 40:31). God's mercies make this possible; as Lamentations declares, 'They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness' (Lamentations 3:23). Ultimately, renewal is God's work, not our own achievement. Paul reminds us that God saved us 'by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost' (Titus 3:5). When the heart is weary or stained, the believer can pray with David, 'Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me' (Psalm 51:10). This is the heartbeat of renewal: a humble asking, and a faithful God who delights to make all things new.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about renewal?
The Bible presents renewal as God's transforming work. Romans 12:2 calls believers to 'be transformed by the renewing of your mind,' and 2 Corinthians 4:16 says the inward person 'is renewed day by day.' Renewal restores, refreshes, and reshapes us through God's Spirit and mercy.
How can I find renewed strength when I am weary?
Isaiah 40:31 promises that 'they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.' Lamentations 3:23 adds that God's mercies 'are new every morning.' Waiting on God in prayer and trust is the path to renewed strength.
Is renewal something I do or something God does?
Renewal is ultimately God's work. Titus 3:5 says he saved us by 'the renewing of the Holy Ghost,' and in Psalm 51:10 David prays, 'renew a right spirit within me.' We cooperate by yielding to God and renewing our minds (Ephesians 4:23), but the transforming power is his.
