Redemption Through Christ

Redemption is the act by which God has bought back humanity from sin and its consequences through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The Greek term "lytron" evokes the payment of a ransom, the price paid to free a captive or a slave. Ephesians 1:7 declares it: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace." Redemption is therefore not an abstract idea; it has a definite price: the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18-19). Redemption is not limited to forgiveness. It restores the broken relationship with God, transforms the identity of the sinner, and gives back his freedom. 1 Corinthians 6:20 reminds us: "For you were bought with a price." Sin held us as slaves; Christ paid the ransom to give us full freedom. The redeemed is no longer defined by his fault but by the love of the One who claimed him as His own. Finally, redemption has both a present and a future dimension. It is already accomplished spiritually in conversion, but it still awaits its consummation. Romans 8:23 speaks of "the redemption of our bodies" as a reality still hoped for, and all creation groans for this liberation (Romans 8:21-22). Redemption is thus total and cosmic: it embraces the soul, the body, and the universe, until God makes all things new.
