The Red Sea in the Bible

The crossing of the Red Sea is one of the great defining miracles of the Old Testament, the moment when God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt and revealed himself as a mighty Redeemer. With Pharaoh's army closing in and the sea blocking their escape, the people of Israel were gripped by terror. Moses answered their fear with words of faith: "Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today... The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent" (Exodus 14:13-14). The deliverance would be God's doing, not Israel's. Then came the miracle itself. "Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided" (Exodus 14:21). The people walked through on dry ground: "the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left" (Exodus 14:22). When the Egyptians pursued, the waters returned and the army of Pharaoh was overthrown. The response to this deliverance was worship. On the far shore Moses and the people sang, "I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea" (Exodus 15:1). The Song of the Sea became one of Israel's earliest hymns of praise, celebrating the God who saves. Scripture returns to this event again and again as a sign of God's power and faithfulness. The psalmist recalls, "He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry, and he led them through the deep as through a desert" (Psalm 106:9). The New Testament holds it up as a model of faith: "By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned" (Hebrews 11:29). The Red Sea stands forever as a testimony that God makes a way of salvation where there seems to be no way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened at the Red Sea in the Bible?
Fleeing Egypt with Pharaoh's army in pursuit, Israel was trapped at the sea. God parted the waters by a strong wind, and "the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground" (Exodus 14:21-22). When the Egyptians followed, the sea returned and destroyed them.
Why is the Red Sea crossing so important in Scripture?
It is the defining act of God's deliverance, freeing Israel from slavery and revealing him as Redeemer. Moses and the people responded in worship: "I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously" (Exodus 15:1), and the event is recalled throughout Scripture (Psalm 106:9).
What does the Red Sea teach us about faith?
Hebrews 11:29 says, "By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land." The crossing teaches that salvation is God's work to be received by faith. As Moses urged, we are to "stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord" (Exodus 14:13) when escape seems impossible.
