The Rainbow Covenant in the Bible
The rainbow covenant is the gracious promise God made to Noah, his descendants, and "every living creature" after the flood, sealing it with the sign of the rainbow set in the clouds. After judgment had cleansed the earth, God bound Himself by an everlasting pledge never again to destroy all flesh with a flood. Genesis 9:12 introduces it: "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come." The sign itself is striking. "I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth" (Genesis 9:13). What might appear merely as light refracted through rain becomes a divinely appointed reminder of mercy. Remarkably, the covenant is described as something God Himself remembers: "Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures" (Genesis 9:16). The rainbow is not chiefly for us to recall our duty, but a token of God's own faithfulness. Genesis 9:14-15 underscores the comfort: when God brings clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears, He will remember His covenant and the waters will never again become a flood to destroy all life. Verse 17 repeats the assurance, grounding human security not in nature's predictability but in God's reliable word. The rainbow reappears at the throne of God. Ezekiel saw the radiant glory of the Lord: "Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him" (Ezekiel 1:28). The same bow that signals mercy after judgment encircles God's glory, and in Revelation it surrounds His throne. The rainbow covenant thus assures us that the God who judges sin also delights to show mercy and keep His promises.
