Racial Justice in the Bible
Racial justice is the conviction, grounded in Scripture, that every human being bears the image of God and is therefore worthy of equal dignity, fair treatment, and love regardless of ethnicity or ancestry. The Bible begins with one human family and ends with a redeemed people "from every nation, tribe, people and language" (Revelation 7:9), revealing that ethnic diversity is not a problem to be erased but a glory to be gathered before the throne of God. The gospel itself dismantles the barriers that divide peoples. Paul declares, "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). In the new humanity Christ creates, "there is no Gentile or Jew... Christ is all, and is in all" (Colossians 3:11). These texts do not erase ethnic identity but deny it any standing to justify partiality or contempt. This truth was hard-won even for the early church. When Peter entered the house of Cornelius, he confessed, "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism, but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right" (Acts 10:34-35). Because God is impartial, His people must be too. James warns plainly that "if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers" (James 2:9). Racial justice is therefore not a political add-on but an outworking of biblical righteousness. Micah 6:8 sums up what the Lord requires: "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." To pursue racial justice is to love our neighbor as ourselves, to resist partiality, and to long for the day when every nation worships together in unbroken fellowship.
