What the Bible Says About Purity Culture

"Purity culture" refers to a movement, especially common in evangelical circles, that emphasized sexual abstinence before marriage through pledges, rings, and teaching. The Bible itself does not endorse a particular cultural program, but it speaks clearly and graciously about sexual holiness, the worth of every person, and the gospel of grace that purity culture sometimes obscured. Scripture's call is real: "It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable" (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4). The biblical teaching on sexual purity is meant to flow from love for God and others, not fear or shame. Paul writes, "Flee from sexual immorality... whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18), and Hebrews honors God's good design: "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure" (Hebrews 13:4). Sexual faithfulness is a gift and a calling, not a measure of a person's value. Where purity culture sometimes went wrong was in reducing holiness to rules, tying a person's worth to virginity, and neglecting grace for those who failed. Scripture, however, locates purity first in the heart: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5:8). True purity is about a whole life devoted to God, of which sexual integrity is one part. Paul tells Timothy to be an example "in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12), showing purity is comprehensive, not merely physical. Philippians 4:8 directs the believer's whole mind toward what is good: "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure... think about such things." The Bible thus affirms the goodness of sexual holiness while grounding it in grace, the dignity of every person, and a renewed heart, rather than in fear, performance, or shame.
