PTSD and Trauma in the Bible

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) names the lasting wounds that traumatic events leave on the mind and body: fear, flashbacks, sleeplessness, and a sense of being overwhelmed. While the Bible does not use the clinical term, it speaks tenderly and realistically to the brokenhearted and the deeply distressed, offering both comfort and hope. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). God does not stand far off from trauma; he draws near to those whose hearts have been shattered. Scripture promises that God himself heals these deep wounds. "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). The image is of a gentle physician carefully tending injuries the world cannot see. To the fearful and trembling, the Lord speaks reassurance: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10). His presence and strength meet us precisely where fear feels strongest. For the anxiety and hypervigilance that often accompany trauma, Paul gives a pathway to peace: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). Jesus extends a personal invitation to the weary: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). God is also called "the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3), who comforts us so that we can comfort others. Faith does not erase the reality of trauma, and seeking professional and pastoral help is wise. Yet the Bible assures every sufferer that they are not alone: the God who is near to the brokenhearted walks with them toward healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about PTSD and trauma?
Though the term PTSD is modern, the Bible speaks directly to trauma's wounds. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit," and Psalm 147:3 promises that God "heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Scripture meets sufferers with nearness, comfort, and hope.
How can faith help with the fear and anxiety of trauma?
God repeatedly speaks peace to fearful hearts. Isaiah 41:10 says, "Do not fear, for I am with you... I will uphold you." Philippians 4:6-7 invites us to bring every anxiety to God in prayer so that "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds." Jesus also offers rest to the weary (Matthew 11:28).
Is it okay for Christians to seek help for PTSD?
Yes. Trusting God and seeking help go together. God is "the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3), and he often brings comfort through others, including counselors, pastors, and doctors. Faith does not erase trauma, but it assures sufferers they are not alone as they pursue healing.
