The Promises of God
The promises of God are the foundation upon which the believer builds his faith. The apostle Paul declares that "all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us" (2 Corinthians 1:20). Every promise thus finds its fulfillment and its guarantee in Jesus Christ. God is faithful to his word because his very character requires it: he "cannot lie" (Titus 1:2). The promises of Scripture are not blank checks to be filled in according to our whims, but declarations of the will and character of God, addressed to those who belong to him. The apostle Peter recalls the greatness of this treasure: God has "given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4). Each promise reflects an aspect of God's character and will for his children: his presence, his provision, his pardon, his peace, his victory, and his eternal life. To claim the promises of God in prayer is no manipulation; on the contrary, it is an act of faith that honors the Lord by leaning on his word. The prophet Isaiah relays this invitation of the Lord: "Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified" (Isaiah 43:26). To cite God's promises before him is to acknowledge his faithfulness and to express our trust in it. And so, when the believer faces uncertainty or doubt, he is called to return to the divine promises: they are not empty words but commitments sealed by the blood of Christ. What God has promised, he will unfailingly accomplish.
