The Sanctity of Human Life
The biblical case for life is born from the recognition that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" (Genesis 1:27). This foundational truth confers upon every person a sacred and inalienable dignity, regardless of age, strength, or usefulness in the eyes of the world. Psalm 139 contemplates with wonder the work of God in the womb: "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb... my substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret... and in thy book all my members were written" (Psalm 139:13-16). God therefore forms the human being from the womb, with knowledge and design. Likewise, the Lord declares to the prophet, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee" (Jeremiah 1:5). Human life thus possesses a sacred value from conception. Defending the most vulnerable is an integral part of the call to divine justice. The book of Proverbs exhorts, "If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain" (Proverbs 24:11). Every life is precious in God's eyes, and to defend it is not merely a moral or political stance: it is a response of faith to the Creator who fashions each person in secret. This call to honor life also commits us to surround mothers in distress and children in danger with concrete and faithful compassion.
