Prisoners in the Bible
The Bible carries a special heart for prisoners. The prophet Isaiah announced that the Messiah was anointed "to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound" (Isaiah 61:1-2). Jesus himself quoted this passage at the very beginning of his ministry in the synagogue at Nazareth, declaring that the word was fulfilled in him (Luke 4:18-21). The Lord does not forget those whom the world has shut away behind bars: Psalm 69:33 promises that "the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners." This divine concern becomes a calling for his people as well. In the great judgment discourse, Jesus identifies visiting prisoners as one of the acts that mark the heirs of the kingdom: "I was in prison, and ye came unto me" (Matthew 25:36). To serve the prisoner is to serve Christ himself. Yet the Bible also speaks of a captivity deeper than any cell: the bondage of sin. And God is the God of deliverance. Romans 6:17-18 declares that the believer has been "made free from sin," and Jesus affirms, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed" (John 8:36). No iron bar can separate a person from the love of God; in the darkest prison, the Spirit can accomplish his work. The apostle Paul, in fact, wrote some of his most joyful epistles from a cell. True freedom is inward, and Christ alone offers it to all who trust in him.
