The Calling of the Faithful Preacher

The preacher is called by God to proclaim His Word with faithfulness, courage, and love. The apostle Paul exhorts Timothy in these words: "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season" (2 Timothy 4:2). The preacher is not merely a gifted orator; he is a messenger who brings the living Word of God to hearts in need. Biblical preaching converts, edifies, reproves, comforts, and exhorts. Its effectiveness does not depend on the eloquence of the speaker, but on his faithfulness to the Scriptures and his walk with the Holy Spirit. The necessity of this calling is underscored by Paul in his epistle to the Romans: "How shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?" (Romans 10:14-15). The preacher is therefore both called and sent: he does not appoint himself to this mission, but receives it from God. This is why his responsibility is immense. He must declare the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27), neither diluting the gospel nor seeking the approval of men. The true preacher speaks truths that are sometimes uncomfortable, but always with sincere love, knowing that the souls who hear him are precious to the Lord. His reward is not the applause of the audience, but to hear one day from the Master's mouth: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:23). Thus the ministry of preaching remains one of the means by which God chooses to save those who believe (1 Corinthians 1:21).
