The Effectual Prayer of the Righteous

The prayer of the righteous possesses great power and real effectiveness (James 5:16). It is not moral perfection that makes prayer effective, but the believer's standing before God in Jesus Christ. The righteous one is he who has been justified by faith: his prayer rises to the throne of grace with genuine spiritual authority, not because he has earned it, but because the blood of Christ grants him access. The apostle James deliberately chooses the example of Elijah to illustrate this truth. He reminds us that Elijah "was a man subject to like passions as we are," subject to the same weaknesses, and yet his prayer withheld the rain for three years and six months, then brought it back upon the earth (1 Kings 17-18; James 5:17-18). Thus the effectiveness of prayer does not depend on the greatness of man, but on the faithfulness of God and the righteousness imputed to him in Christ. Romans 5:1 declares that "being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." It is from this peace and this received righteousness that confidence in prayer springs. The believer therefore does not pray feeling unworthy, but from the position Christ has secured for him. His requests, presented in faith and according to the will of God, carry the full weight of the Lord's righteousness. The prayer of the righteous is not a privilege reserved for a few exceptional saints: it is the inheritance of all who trust in the Lord.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the prayer of the righteous so powerful?
James 5:16 declares, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." The believer in Christ is declared righteous by God (Romans 5:1), which gives full access to the Lord's presence in prayer.
Do I have to be perfect for my prayers to be answered?
No. Elijah, in 1 Kings 17-18, was a man of like passions as we are, whose prayers were powerful because he trusted in God. What makes prayer effective is faith and agreement with the will of God, not personal perfection.
How can I grow in effective prayer?
Abide in Christ and let His Word abide in you (John 15:7), pray with perseverance (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and align your requests with the will of God (1 John 5:14). The righteousness received in Christ assures you that the Father hears you.
