What the Bible Says About Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is the use of violence, force, or intimidation to harm and control another person, and Scripture speaks against it with striking clarity. The Bible reveals a God who treasures human life as made in his image, and who is grieved when that life is assaulted. The psalmist declares that "the LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion" (Psalm 11:5). Far from being indifferent to cruelty, God sets himself in active opposition to those who delight in harming others. Within marriage and family, where abuse is especially devastating, the Bible commands tenderness rather than harm. Husbands are told to love their wives "just as Christ loved the church," for "no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for it" (Ephesians 5:29). Paul commands plainly, "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them" (Colossians 3:19). The marriage covenant is meant to be a refuge, not a place of fear. God also testifies through the prophet that he hates the violent breaking of covenant and the man "who covers his garment with violence" (Malachi 2:16). Scripture refuses to romanticize the abuser. It warns, "Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways" (Proverbs 3:31), and goes further: "Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him" (1 John 3:15). The hostility behind violence is treated as deadly seriousness before God. At the same time, the Bible draws near to the wounded with comfort: "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). This is not a call for victims to silently endure ongoing harm. Seeking safety, involving authorities God has appointed, and protecting the vulnerable are consistent with both wisdom and love. The God who hates violence is the same God who draws near to bind up the broken, offering both justice and tender refuge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bible condemn physical abuse?
Yes. Psalm 11:5 says the wicked "who love violence, he hates with a passion," and Proverbs 3:31 warns, "Do not envy the violent." Scripture treats hatred behind violence so seriously that 1 John 3:15 calls anyone who hates a brother a murderer. God stands firmly against those who harm others.
What does the Bible say to a husband who is abusive?
Colossians 3:19 commands, "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them," and Ephesians 5:29 says no one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, the standard for treating a spouse. Malachi 2:16 records that God hates the man who covers his garment with violence. Abuse is a direct violation of God's design for marriage.
Does God care about victims of abuse?
Deeply. Psalm 34:18 declares, "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." God does not call victims to silently endure ongoing harm; he draws near with comfort, and his concern for justice is consistent with seeking safety and the protection of God-appointed authorities.
