Petition in the Bible
Petition is the form of prayer in which believers bring their specific requests and needs directly to God. While prayer also includes praise, thanksgiving, and confession, petition is the bold act of asking, grounded in the conviction that God is a loving Father who hears and answers His children. Far from being selfish or presumptuous, petition is invited, even commanded, throughout Scripture as an expression of dependence and trust. The apostle Paul gives one of the clearest invitations to petition in Philippians 4:6: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." Anxiety is to be answered not with worry but with specific, grateful asking. Paul also widens the scope of petition beyond personal needs. In 1 Timothy 2:1 he urges that "supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men," so that petition becomes an act of love for others as well. The confidence behind petition rests on God's character and will. John writes in 1 John 5:14, "this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us," and adds in 1 John 5:15 that if we know He hears us, we know we have the requests we have asked. Jesus Himself encouraged persistent, expectant asking in Matthew 7:7: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Scripture also assures us that God truly hears our petitions. David testifies in Psalm 6:9, "The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer." And Hebrews 4:16 invites us to "come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." Petition, then, is not a desperate attempt to twist God's arm, but a confident approach to a gracious throne, where our requests, shaped by His will and offered in faith, are welcomed, heard, and answered for our good and His glory.
