Peter: The Apostle Transformed by Christ
Simon Peter is one of the most human and endearing figures of the New Testament. Impulsive, passionate, prone to both falls and restorations, Peter is the very model of the disciple who fails but whom God does not abandon. Philippians 3:14 speaks of pressing 'toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus,' and Second Timothy 4:7 of the fight carried through to the end: 'I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.' Peter knew both realities: the failures and the final perseverance. Matthew 16:18 records the Lord's word: 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church' — a recognition of the foundation of faith he had confessed: 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Yet that very night of denial would reveal his frailty. Peter's story is one of the restoring grace of Christ. After denying him three times, Peter met the risen Lord who asked him three times, 'Lovest thou me?' (John 21:15-17). Each question lifted a denial, and each answer opened into a mission: 'Feed my sheep.' Peter's fall was not the end of his story but the beginning of his dependence on grace. At Pentecost, the same man who had denied his Master out of fear preached with boldness, and three thousand were converted (Acts 2:14-41). God delights to turn falls into springboards for greater service.
