Personal Worship: The Intimate Encounter With God

Personal worship is the practice of worshiping God in secret, apart from corporate gatherings. It is the foundation of the believer's spiritual life, for it is in the secret place that the heart is oriented toward God without the distractions of the world. Psalm 28:7 expresses this intimate worship: 'The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.' By contrast, First Kings 11:4 solemnly warns: Solomon's heart turned away when his personal worship was compromised by foreign affections. The vitality or decay of a life of faith is therefore decided first in secret. Jesus taught that the Father seeks worshipers who worship him 'in spirit and in truth' (John 4:23-24), for God is Spirit. True worship is thus inward and spiritual before it is outward and public. Matthew 6:6 gives the concrete practice: 'But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.' The Psalms are the great book of personal worship: laments, praises, thanksgivings, and supplications are all addressed directly to God. This worship is nourished by daily prayer, meditation on the Scriptures, private singing, and moments of silence before the Lord.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is personal worship according to the Bible?
John 4:23-24 (KJV): 'But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.' Authentic worship is inward and spiritual.
How do we develop a life of personal worship?
Matthew 6:6 instructs, 'But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.' Personal worship includes: daily prayer, meditation on Scripture, private musical worship, and moments of silence before God.
Why is personal worship so important?
First Kings 11:4 shows that Solomon's heart turned away from God when his personal worship was compromised. The spiritual life is decided first in secret: it is there that the faithfulness which sustains public worship is formed. A living personal worship, nourished by prayer and meditation, keeps the heart oriented toward God and guards against spiritual drift.
