Pentecost in the Bible
Pentecost marks the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus, an event that gave birth to the New Testament church. The name comes from the Greek word for "fiftieth," because the day fell fifty days after Passover. For Israel it was already the Feast of Weeks, a harvest festival, but in Acts 2 it became the moment when God harvested the first great ingathering of believers. Acts 2:1 records that "when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." Suddenly, as Acts 2:2 describes, there came a sound from heaven like a rushing mighty wind that filled the whole house. The visible signs were striking. Acts 2:3 tells of cloven tongues like fire that sat upon each of them, and Acts 2:4 says they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Pilgrims gathered in Jerusalem from many nations heard the gospel in their own languages, a reversal of the confusion of Babel. Peter explained the event by quoting the prophet Joel: as Joel 2:28 and Acts 2:17 declare, in the last days God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh, and sons and daughters would prophesy. Peter's sermon pressed his hearers to respond. In Acts 2:38 he urged them to "repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins," promising the gift of the Holy Spirit. The response was extraordinary: Acts 2:41 records that about three thousand souls were added to the church that single day. Pentecost thus stands as the inauguration of the age of the Spirit, the empowering of ordinary disciples for bold witness, and the fulfillment of Christ's promise to send the Comforter. For believers today it remains a reminder that the same Spirit who came in wind and fire still indwells, unites, and equips the people of God for mission.
