Peacemaking in the Bible

Peacemaking is one of the clearest marks of God's people, for the God of the Bible is a God of peace who reconciles enemies to Himself and to one another. Scripture does not present peace as mere passivity or the absence of conflict, but as an active pursuit that flows from a transformed heart. The psalmist commands, "Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it" (PSA.34.14). Peace must be chased after, deliberately and persistently, even when it runs from us. This pursuit is so pleasing to God that "when a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him" (PRO.16.7). A life that honors God often disarms hostility. Jesus placed peacemaking at the very center of kingdom character: "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God" (MAT.5.9). To make peace is to resemble the heavenly Father, who is the great Reconciler. This calling is realistic about human limits yet relentless in effort: "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men" (ROM.12.18). We cannot control how others respond, but we are responsible for doing everything within our power to pursue reconciliation. Within the church especially, believers are urged to "follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another" (ROM.14.19), choosing what builds others up over what tears them down. The deepest root of all peacemaking is the gospel itself. God "hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation" (2CO.5.18). Those who have received peace with God through the cross are entrusted to carry that reconciling work into a broken world. Such peace is inseparable from holiness, for we are told to "follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (HEB.12.14). Biblical peacemaking, then, is neither weakness nor compromise with sin; it is the costly, Christlike pursuit of restored relationships, rooted in the reconciliation God has accomplished and aimed at His glory.
