The Passover Feast in the Bible
The Passover Feast is the first of Israel's appointed festivals and the foundational celebration of redemption in Scripture. It commemorates the night the LORD struck the firstborn of Egypt yet passed over every Israelite home marked by the blood of a lamb. The original instructions were urgent and vivid: "Thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover" (EXO.12.11). The posture of the meal preached the message — God's people were a redeemed pilgrim people, ready to leave bondage behind at His command. From the outset the feast was to be a perpetual memorial. "And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations" (EXO.12.14). Parents were to explain it to their children: "It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover" (EXO.12.27). The festival was fixed in the calendar at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month (LEV.23.5), and Israel was commanded to keep it faithfully even in the wilderness: "Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season" (NUM.9.2). Moses later tied it to the very identity of the nation: "Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night" (DEU.16.1). The Passover Feast reaches its fullest meaning in Jesus Christ. On the night before the cross He gathered His disciples and said, "With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer" (LUK.22.15), transforming the ancient meal into the Lord's Supper. The lamb whose blood once shielded Israel pointed forward to the sinless Lamb of God whose blood shields all who trust in Him. For believers today the Passover Feast is not merely a historical observance but a living gospel — a yearly reminder that redemption is God's gift, purchased at the price of a substitute, and received by faith. It calls us to remember, to give thanks, and to walk in the freedom Christ secured.
