The Parting of the Red Sea in the Bible

The parting of the Red Sea, recorded in Exodus 14, is one of the most dramatic displays of God's saving power in all of Scripture, the climactic act of deliverance that brought Israel out of Egyptian bondage. With Pharaoh's army bearing down behind them and the sea before them, the people were gripped by terror. Yet Moses answered with a word of faith: "Do not be afraid. Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today" (Exodus 14:13). Salvation would come not by Israel's strength but by the Lord's mighty hand. God then commanded Moses to lift up his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea to divide it, so that the Israelites could go through on dry ground (Exodus 14:16). The Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind all night and turned it into dry land, and the waters were divided (Exodus 14:21). So the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left (Exodus 14:22). When the Egyptians pursued them into the seabed, Moses stretched out his hand again, and at daybreak the sea returned to its place, sweeping the entire army into the midst of it (Exodus 14:27). The contrast is total: the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall on their right and left (Exodus 14:29), while their enemies perished. That day the Lord saved Israel, and seeing the great power displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in Him and in His servant Moses (Exodus 14:31). This miracle stands as a lasting testimony that God fights for His people and that no obstacle, however impassable it appears, can thwart His purpose to save. The Red Sea crossing became the defining memory of Israel's redemption, celebrated in song and psalm for generations, and a foreshadowing of the greater deliverance accomplished in Christ. When we face our own impossibilities, this account calls us, like Israel, to stand firm, stop fearing, and watch the Lord make a way where there is no way.
