Orphans in the Bible
Throughout Scripture, orphans stand at the center of God's concern for the vulnerable. In the ancient world a child without a father had no legal protector, no provider, and no advocate, which is precisely why the Bible names the fatherless again and again as people God himself watches over. The law of Moses sets the tone with a sharp warning: "Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless" (Exodus 22:22). To mistreat them was not merely unkind; it provoked the anger of God, who promised to hear their cry and act on their behalf. The character of God is the foundation of this concern. Deuteronomy 10:18 declares that the Lord "defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow," and Psalm 68:5 names him "a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows" in his holy dwelling. The orphan is not forgotten in heaven; the God who reigns over all takes personal responsibility for those whom society overlooks. This identity shapes how his people are called to live. The prophets press this duty onto the conscience of the nation. Isaiah 1:17 commands, "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow." Psalm 82:3 echoes the charge: "Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed." True worship was never separated from justice for the defenseless. Even in repentance, Hosea 14:3 pictures Israel turning back to the God in whom "the fatherless find compassion." The New Testament carries this teaching into the life of the church. James 1:27 defines authentic faith memorably: "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress." Care for orphans, then, is not a side project but a living expression of the gospel. To love the fatherless is to imitate the heart of the Father, who adopts the helpless and welcomes the abandoned into his own family.
