Ordination in the Bible

Ordination in Scripture is the act by which God's people, under his direction, set apart individuals for sacred service through prayer and the laying on of hands. It is not the creation of a special caste but the public recognition of a divine call and the entrusting of responsibility for ministry. The pattern begins in the Old Testament with the setting apart of the Levites: the people of Israel were to lay their hands on the Levites, dedicating them to the service of the LORD (Numbers 8:10). The laying on of hands signified identification, blessing, and the transfer of a holy task. The early church carried this practice forward. When seven men were chosen to serve the Jerusalem congregation, the apostles prayed and laid their hands on them (Acts 6:6), commissioning them for their work. At Antioch, after fasting and prayer, the church laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them off on their missionary journey (Acts 13:3). As churches were planted, Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord (Acts 14:23). Ordination is tied to spiritual gifting. Paul reminds Timothy not to neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you (1 Timothy 4:14), and again urges him to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands (2 Timothy 1:6). The act did not magically confer power, but it recognized and stirred up the grace God had given. Finally, Scripture warns that ordination must never be hasty or careless. Paul charges Timothy, Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure (1 Timothy 5:22). Recognizing leaders is a weighty, prayerful, and discerning task. Biblical ordination thus honors God's call, equips the church with tested servants, and guards the holiness of those who lead.
