Omnipresence in the Bible
Omnipresence is the truth that God is fully present everywhere at once. He is not spread thinly across creation like a substance, nor confined to one place like a creature; the whole of his being is present at every point of space. Psalm 139 is the great meditation on this attribute. David asks, Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? (Psalm 139:7). He then surveys the heights and the depths: If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! (Psalm 139:8). David pushes the thought to its limits, taking the wings of the morning and dwelling in the uttermost parts of the sea, only to confess, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me (Psalm 139:9-10). There is no region of the universe, no corner of human experience, where God is absent. He fills heaven and earth, as he declares through Jeremiah: Do I not fill heaven and earth? (Jeremiah 23:24). No one can hide from him in secret places. This presence is also watchful and personal. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3). God's omnipresence therefore carries both warning and comfort: it exposes every hidden deed, yet it assures the faithful that they are never beyond his loving care. The New Testament draws the practical and evangelistic implication. Preaching in Athens, Paul declared that God made all nations that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him, though he is actually not far from each one of us (Acts 17:27). The God who is everywhere is also near, inviting every person into fellowship with him. For the believer, omnipresence means there is no fear, no journey, and no dark valley where God's presence cannot be found.
