The New Heaven and the New Earth

Scripture promises a new heaven and a new earth, where God will make all things new. Revelation 21:1-5 announces this glorious vision: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away... He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore." This is the believer's ultimate hope: a restored creation, freed from sin, suffering, and death, where we will dwell forever with God. This promise is not mere poetic consolation but the culmination of the whole redemptive design, for through Christ "all things were created" (Colossians 1:16) and through him they will also be renewed. 2 Peter 3:13 confirms it: "According to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." The righteousness so often absent from the present world will there reign at last in fullness. The solemn word of Revelation 21:5, "Behold, I am making all things new," sums up this hope: God does not merely repair a fallen world; he renews it entirely. While the present heaven and earth will pass away, the Lord's words "will not pass away" (Matthew 24:35), guaranteeing the fulfillment of the promise. For the tested believer, this vision sustains perseverance: today's tears will be wiped away by the very hand of God, and communion with him will be full and unending. The best is yet to come, for the One seated on the throne has promised to make all things new.
