The Nazarite Vow in the Bible

The Nazarite vow was a voluntary act of consecration by which an Israelite, man or woman, set themselves apart for a season of special devotion to the Lord. Its requirements are laid out in Numbers 6, where God instructs Moses, "When either a man or a woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord" (Numbers 6:2). The Hebrew word behind "Nazirite" means to be separated or dedicated, and the vow visibly marked a person as belonging wholly to God for the time of their dedication. Three outward signs distinguished the Nazarite. First, abstinence from the fruit of the vine: "he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink... and shall not eat fresh grapes or dried" (Numbers 6:3). Second, uncut hair: "No razor shall touch his head; until the time is completed... he shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long" (Numbers 6:5). Third, avoidance of all contact with the dead, for "all the days that he separates himself to the Lord he shall not go near a dead body" (Numbers 6:8). These restrictions were not ends in themselves but visible expressions of an undivided, holy commitment. Scripture records several lifelong Nazarites set apart from birth. The angel told Samson's mother, "the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb" (Judges 13:5), and Samson himself confessed the secret of his strength: "A razor has never come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb" (Judges 16:17). His tragic story warns that outward consecration must be matched by inward faithfulness. The vow continued into the New Testament era. In Acts 18:18, Paul "had cut his hair, for he was under a vow," likely a Nazarite vow, showing that the practice persisted as an expression of devotion. The Nazarite vow ultimately points beyond itself to the call upon all believers to be set apart, holy, and wholly consecrated to the Lord who redeems them.
