Nazareth in the Bible
Nazareth was an obscure village in the hills of Galilee, yet it holds an honored place in the Bible as the hometown of Jesus. It was here that the angel Gabriel was sent to Mary: "In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth" (Luke 1:26). From this small, overlooked town came the announcement that would change the world, reminding us that God delights to work through humble places and humble people. Nazareth shaped Jesus's earthly upbringing. After the family returned from Egypt, "they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth" (Luke 2:39), and there Jesus grew. Matthew connects this to prophecy: "And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene" (Matthew 2:23). Mark begins his account of Jesus's ministry there: "Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan" (Mark 1:9). The town carried a lowly reputation. When Philip told Nathanael about Jesus, Nathanael scoffed, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:46). The very name became a kind of stumbling block, yet it was precisely from this despised place that the Messiah came. The crowds later identified Him by it: "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee" (Matthew 21:11). Nazareth was also where Jesus publicly took up His mission. "He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read" (Luke 4:16). There He announced that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him to proclaim good news. Though His hometown would reject Him, Nazareth remains a lasting testimony that God exalts the lowly and fulfills His promises in unexpected ways.
