What the Bible Says About Money

Scripture speaks of money with great frankness: it does not condemn money in itself, but it warns that "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10). The danger, then, is not wealth as such, but the attachment of the heart that turns it into an idol and draws us away from God. Jesus sets before us a radical choice: "No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and money" (Matthew 6:24). We cannot place our trust at the same time in the Lord and in material possessions. The Bible therefore calls us to a healthy relationship with money: to receive it as a gift, to manage it with wisdom, and to use it with generosity. 2 Corinthians 9:7 teaches that "God loves a cheerful giver," without compulsion or regret. Hebrews 13:5 exhorts us to keep our lives "free from the love of money," content with what we have, for the Lord has promised, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." The key is to put God in first place: "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). These verses teach us not to store up perishable treasures, but to place our trust in the providence of God and to pursue riches that endure eternally.
