The Ministry of Jesus in the Bible
The ministry of Jesus is the public work He carried out between His baptism and His crucifixion: proclaiming the kingdom of God, teaching, healing, and doing good as He revealed the Father and accomplished the mission for which He came. The Gospels summarize its central message clearly. In Matthew 4:17 Jesus begins to preach, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,' announcing that God's promised reign had drawn near in His own person. Mark 1:14 likewise records that after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee 'proclaiming the gospel of God,' setting the tone for everything that followed. His ministry combined word and deed. Matthew 4:23 describes Him going throughout Galilee, 'teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease,' and Matthew 9:35 repeats this threefold pattern of teaching, preaching, and healing, showing a Savior who addressed both the soul and the body. Jesus Himself defined His mission in Luke 4:18, reading from Isaiah in the Nazareth synagogue: the Spirit of the Lord had anointed Him 'to proclaim good news to the poor... liberty to the captives... to set at liberty those who are oppressed.' In Luke 4:43 He insists, 'I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose,' revealing that proclamation was the very heart of His calling. Peter later summed up the whole ministry in Acts 10:38, declaring that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and that 'he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.' Together these passages reveal a ministry that was Spirit-empowered, kingdom-centered, compassionate to the suffering, and aimed at calling sinners to repentance and faith. The ministry of Jesus is both the foundation of the gospel and the pattern His church is called to continue in His name.
