Ministry in the Bible

Ministry, in the biblical sense, is service rendered to God and to others in His name. The very word translates a Greek term for serving, and Scripture roots all ministry in the example of Jesus Himself. In Matthew 20:28 He declares that the Son of Man 'came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many,' establishing self-giving service, not status or power, as the heart of every calling. From this foundation the New Testament unfolds a rich picture of ministry. The apostles devoted themselves in Acts 6:4 to 'prayer and the ministry of the word,' while appointing others to serve practical needs, showing that ministry includes both spiritual leadership and humble service. Paul described his own life's purpose in Acts 20:24, counting his life as nothing if only he might finish his course and 'the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.' He defined a central form of ministry in 2 Corinthians 5:18, where God 'gave us the ministry of reconciliation,' making believers ambassadors who call others to be reconciled to God. Ministry is not reserved for a few professionals. Ephesians 4:12 explains that God gives leaders 'to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,' so that every believer shares in the work. Paul also charged individuals to take their service seriously: in Colossians 4:17 he urges Archippus to 'fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord,' and in 2 Timothy 4:5 he tells Timothy to be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, and 'fulfill your ministry.' Together these passages teach that ministry flows from the servant heart of Christ, centers on the gospel of reconciliation, belongs to the whole church, and is to be faithfully completed. Whether through preaching, teaching, mercy, or daily acts of service, ministry is how God's people make His love and truth known in the world.
