Mental Health in the Bible

Scripture offers comfort and hope to the troubled soul. God cares for the whole person, body and mind alike, and he invites us to lay our anxieties before him. The apostle Peter urges: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Our heavenly Father is not indifferent to our inner struggles; he knows our deepest thoughts and longs to meet us there. In the face of worry, Paul gives a precious remedy: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). This divine peace does not always erase the circumstances, but it guards the heart and mind in the midst of the storm. Transformation also comes through the renewing of the mind: "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). The psalmist, in his distress, cried out: "Why art thou cast down, O my soul... hope thou in God" (Psalm 42:11). Scripture thus walks alongside the one who struggles in his mind, reminding him that God sustains, that seeking help is wise, and that his peace is real. "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart" (Psalm 34:18). These verses are a source of comfort for the dark days.
