Media in the Bible

The Bible does not mention screens, news feeds, or streaming, yet it speaks directly to the questions media raises: what we look at, what we let into our minds, and how we are shaped by what we consume. The governing concern is the guarding of the heart. Proverbs 4:23 commands, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Because images and messages flow from the eyes into the heart, the psalmist resolves in Psalm 101:3, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes." These verses make the believer a deliberate gatekeeper of what they watch and read. Scripture then sets a positive standard for the mind. Philippians 4:8 tells us to fill our thoughts with "whatsoever things are true... honest... just... pure... lovely" and of "good report." Colossians 3:2 lifts the gaze higher still: "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." Media is not neutral; it forms desires and assumptions, so Romans 12:2 warns, "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." What we repeatedly take in either conforms us to the culture or is filtered through a renewed mind. The New Testament also calls for discernment and even resistance. Ephesians 5:11 says, "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." And 1 John 2:16 names the appetites that worldly media so often feeds: "the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life." A biblical approach to media is therefore neither fearful withdrawal nor careless indulgence. It is wise stewardship of the eyes and mind, choosing what is true and pure, refusing what corrupts, and letting every screen serve a heart that belongs to God.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about media?
Though the Bible predates modern media, it addresses what we watch and let into our minds. Psalm 101:3 says, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes," and Proverbs 4:23 commands us to guard the heart. These principles call believers to be discerning about all they consume.
How should a Christian choose what media to consume?
Philippians 4:8 gives the standard: dwell on what is true, honest, pure, lovely, and of good report. Ephesians 5:11 adds that we should "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness." Choose media that builds up rather than feeds sinful appetites.
Can media affect our spiritual life?
Yes. Romans 12:2 warns, "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." What we repeatedly take in shapes our desires. 1 John 2:16 warns against media that feeds "the lust of the eyes" and "the pride of life."
