Measure for Measure in the Bible

"Measure for measure" names a recurring biblical principle: the standard you use toward others becomes the standard used toward you, and what a person sows they will reap. Jesus stated it directly in Matthew 7:2: "For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." Mark 4:24 repeats the warning and adds a promise of increase: "with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given." How we treat others sets the terms for how we ourselves are treated. This principle has a generous side as well as a sober one. In Luke 6:38 Jesus says, "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom." Generosity returns multiplied. Paul applies the same law to giving in 2 Corinthians 9:6: "He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." Proverbs 11:25 agrees: "The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself." The principle also carries moral accountability. Galatians 6:7 warns, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." And in Obadiah 1:15 God declares to the proud nations, "as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head." Judgment answers cruelty as surely as blessing answers grace. Taken together, these verses teach a moral universe ordered by a faithful God. The measure of mercy, generosity, and judgment we extend will return to us, so Scripture urges us to be quick to give, slow to condemn, and confident that God repays both kindness and wrong.
