The Meaning of Life in the Bible
The great question of the meaning of life finds its answer in God, our Creator and our final end. Scripture teaches that we were made to know, love, and glorify God, and to find in him our eternal joy. After exploring the emptiness of pleasures and riches, the Preacher concludes: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man" (Ecclesiastes 12:13). True meaning is found not in what passes away, but in a life lived for God. Jesus reveals that eternal life, and therefore the ultimate meaning of existence, consists in knowing God: "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). Our reason for being lies not in the pursuit of our own glory, but in fellowship with the One who made us. The apostle Paul expresses this purpose with force: "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). And he declares: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). The meaning of life, then, is not an unsolvable riddle but a calling: to be reconciled to God through Christ and to walk each day in the purpose for which we were created. These verses turn the heart toward the true goal, the one that endures beyond this passing life.
