The Believer's Mark: Sealed by the Spirit

The Bible speaks of different kinds of spiritual signs or marks that distinguish those who belong to God. Far from being mere outward symbols, these marks point to a deep reality: the belonging, protection, and destiny of those whom the Lord has redeemed. The apostle Paul writes: "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14); the believer presses toward a glorious end, marked by the divine calling. The most precious seal is that of the Spirit. Paul affirms: "In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance" (Ephesians 1:13-14). This invisible mark guarantees that we belong to Christ and that our salvation is secure. Elsewhere, the prophet Ezekiel describes the temple filled with the glory of God, where those who sigh over sin receive a mark upon their foreheads (Ezekiel 9:4), a sign of preservation in the midst of judgment. Thus, to bear the mark of God is to be acknowledged as belonging to Him. Paul could say: "I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus" (Galatians 6:17), a testimony of his faithfulness amid suffering. These verses teach that the redeemed bear the mark of Christ: sealed by the Holy Spirit, kept and protected, they await with assurance the promised inheritance. The believer's mark is not something to fear, but a sign of love and eternal security.
