Manna from Heaven, Bread of Life

Manna was the bread that God gave Israel each day in the wilderness, teaching them to depend on His daily provision. The LORD said to Moses: "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you" (Exodus 16:4). Every morning the people gathered this miraculous gift, "like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey" (Exodus 16:31). They could not hoard it for the next day, except on the eve of the Sabbath: thus God taught them to trust Him day after day. This episode in the wilderness carries a profound spiritual lesson. Moses later recalled: "Man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live" (Deuteronomy 8:3), a word that Jesus took up during His temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:4). The manna nourished the body, but it pointed to a deeper hunger that God alone can satisfy. Jesus reveals the ultimate meaning of the manna when He declares: "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger" (John 6:35). He adds: "Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead... I am the living bread which came down from heaven" (John 6:49-51). These verses invite us to trust in the faithfulness of God, who provides each day for His people, and to feed on Christ, the true bread come down from heaven.
