Managers in the Bible
Scripture presents the manager, or steward, as someone entrusted with another person's resources and held accountable for how faithfully they handle them. The clearest portrait is Joseph, of whom Genesis 39:4 says Potiphar "made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put into his hand." Joseph's integrity under authority made him a trusted manager even in slavery, and that same faithfulness eventually placed all Egypt under his care. The Bible's vision of management is therefore rooted in trustworthiness before God before it is measured by results before people. Jesus made this explicit in His parables. In Luke 12:42 He asks, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household?" The answer defines godly management: faithfulness, wisdom, and readiness to give an account when the master returns. The shrewd manager of Luke 16:1 is commended not for dishonesty but for foresight, teaching that those entrusted with responsibility should act prudently with what is not ultimately their own. Paul distills the principle in 1 Corinthians 4:2: "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." Management in the New Testament is also a spiritual office. 1 Peter 4:10 calls every believer to "minister" their gifts "as good stewards of the manifold grace of God," and Titus 1:7 requires that an overseer be "blameless, as the steward of God." The reward for faithful management is intimacy and increased trust: in Matthew 25:21 the master says, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant... I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." For anyone who leads people, money, or ministry today, these verses reframe authority as a sacred trust. A biblical manager serves rather than dominates, keeps honest accounts, develops the people under their care, and remembers that everything they oversee belongs first to God.
