Lust and the Pure Heart

Scripture warns against lust, those disordered desires that enslave the heart, and it offers the path of purity and freedom in Christ. The apostle John writes: "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world" (1 John 2:16). Lust, then, is not merely an external temptation, but an inner inclination that draws the soul away from God. Jesus goes to the root of the problem: "Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). The battle is fought first in the thoughts and in the heart. This is why Paul exhorts: "Flee fornication" (1 Corinthians 6:18) and calls us to "walk in the Spirit" so that we will "not fulfil the lust of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16). More than mere repression, the Bible calls for a true transformation of the heart. Purity is not won by willpower alone, but by the power of the Spirit who renews the inner being. "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). These verses encourage us to pursue holiness, to flee temptation, to be led by the Spirit, and to find in Christ the true freedom that delivers from the slavery of the passions.
