Lukewarmness in the Bible

Lukewarmness describes a spiritual condition of half-hearted faith, neither cold nor hot, comfortable and complacent rather than fervent for God. The clearest biblical warning against it comes in Jesus' message to the church in Laodicea: "I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!" (Revelation 3:15). The Lord found their indifference so distasteful that He declared, "because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth" (Revelation 3:16). Lukewarm faith is not a safe middle ground; it is a state Christ rejects. The root of Laodicea's lukewarmness was self-sufficiency. They boasted, "I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing," while remaining spiritually "wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17). Material comfort had dulled their hunger for God, leaving them blind to their true poverty. Lukewarmness often grows not from open rebellion but from prosperity that makes us feel we no longer need to depend on the Lord. Yet even this stern rebuke is an act of love. Jesus said, "Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent" (Revelation 3:19). The remedy for lukewarmness is renewed zeal and repentance, not despair. Scripture elsewhere warns of the same drift. Jesus foretold that "because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold" (Matthew 24:12), and warned that "no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62). James adds that "a double-minded man" is "unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8). Lukewarmness, then, is the divided, complacent heart that God calls us to abandon for wholehearted devotion.

Why was the church in Laodicea lukewarm?
They were self-sufficient, boasting, "I am rich... and I need nothing," while being spiritually "wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17). Prosperity had dulled their need for God and left them complacent.
How can a Christian overcome lukewarmness?
Jesus gives the remedy: "Be zealous and repent" (Revelation 3:19), receiving His correction as love. Scripture also warns against a divided heart, since "a double-minded man" is "unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8).
