Loving Your Enemies

Jesus taught a radical word that overturns human logic: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). Where the world repays evil for evil, the disciple of Christ is called to respond with love, blessing, and prayer. This love is neither weakness nor passive resignation, but the reflection of the very heart of God, who "maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good" (Matthew 5:45) and who is kind to the unthankful and to the evil (Luke 6:35). The apostle Paul takes up this teaching in his letter to the Romans: "Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink" (Romans 12:20). He concludes: "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). Loving your enemies breaks the cycle of hatred by a power that God alone can give. This love finds its perfect model in Jesus Himself, who from the cross prayed: "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Thus, loving your enemies is not a distant ideal, but the concrete mark of the children of the Most High, transformed by grace and living witnesses of divine mercy in the midst of a divided world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about loving your enemies?
Jesus declares in Matthew 5:44: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you... and pray for them which despitefully use you." This love reflects God's kindness toward all people (Luke 6:35).
How do we concretely love an enemy according to Scripture?
Romans 12:20-21 teaches us to answer evil with good: to feed the one who is hungry, to give drink to the one who is thirsty, and to "overcome evil with good." Love expresses itself through concrete acts and through prayer.
